Beaufort, North Carolina
Hammock House is located in Beaufort, a quiet village by the sea that was once the haunt of pirates, including the infamous Blackbeard. The house, which was built on a hilltop, has a violent and tragic past. It was once the site of a bloody duel between one Lt. Carruthers and Capt. Madison Brothers. Brothers was engaged to the lovely Samantha and had promised to marry her in the Hammock House after his return from an important voyage.
Unfortunately, time at sea proved too long for Brothers and he came home several days too late. He found Samantha in Hammock House during a party receiving a kiss on the cheek from Lt. Carruthers. Feeling betrayed, Brothers challenged Carruthers to a duel with neither man knowing each other's names. Brothers defeated Carruthers with a fatal wound and the latter died on the staircase. He only found out later that the man he killed was actually his fiancee's loving brother. To this day, the blood stain can still be seen on the staircase. Spirits in the house also refuse to rest, appearing as light orbs and creating unexplained noises.
One of the most famous ghost stories of North Carolina is that of two sisters who were returning from a trip in South Carolina in 1943. There was a horrible thunderstorm, and the sister's truck ran off the road, ending up in the river under the Caroleen Bridge. Both of the sisters died in the accident; however, it was not long after, that local residents claimed to spot the sisters walking on the road right before the bridge.
Many people have claimed that they picked up two elderly women just before the bridge, but as they drove over the bridge, the women disappeared, leaving only two wet spots on the seats. Some people have even claimed to hear the ladies yelling for help as they walk across the bridge. Ghost hunters believe that the sisters are trapped forever in the area.
Located in some woods near Siler City is a large, bare circle where nothing grows, not even weeds. Residents have named this spot The Devil's Tramping Ground. Over several decades, people have placed large rocks within the circle, only to find that the rocks either vanished or moved outside of the circle the next day. In the year 1986, some boy scouts camped near the spot, and one camper set up his tent inside the circle. The next day, his tent was moved 75 yards outside of the circle, and he, nor any of the other campers, knew how it happened.
